Rock Climbing --- 9/2/2007 --- Blue Run Rocks, PA
A huge crowd from Cornell swarmed all over Blue Run Rocks. None of us had ever been there before. It is a fun location, though you can climb it out in a day. Rocks are not more than 30' tall, and many of the climbs are bolted and have anchors at the top, so it is easy to do lots of short climbs in a day. Rock is mostly solid, but still very dirty. Leaders beware and trust your instincts... our topo listed the wrong grade for many climbs.
I took tons of pictures, but light and camera angles were lousy, so I deleted most. Did get a good sequence of Rachel when I was anchored at the top and she was climbing in decent light.
Couldn't even begin to tell you what everyone else climbed. My day went like this (climb numbers and the spelling
of climb names are from the topo we had):
Led #11, Darwin's Dilemna (5.8, really 5.9)
Followed #20, Unnamed (5.8) we called this climb I Just Can't Wait To Be King
TR #10, Levitation (5.11, really 5.10)
TR #14, Power Play (5.11) aided past the mono, but did all the other moves
Led #31, Unnamed (5.8)
TR #28, Taking It Easy (5.8)
TR #29, Stealworker (5.10, will be harder when the jug at the top falls off)
Back to Levitation -- got the redpoint on toprope this time.
TR #32, Jake Said Ouch (5.8, really 5.9+)
Levitation is an area classic and a very fun climb, but only has one hard move. Stealworker was my favorite climb of the day with very sustained climbing. Are Darwin's Dilemna and Stealworker puns, or just the result of a sub-standard elementary school education? We set a rope on Campfire Direct (V5, highball) an area classic which I believe Kenny sent. People also climbed #33, Slab-a-licious at the end of the day. Katie started a trad lead of #26, The Chip, but backed off when she found no gear placements.
